"it's all about the grants, money"

Grants are a big part. So are publications. Not only publications, but publications that others reference. It is about presenting at conferences and getting name recognition. It is about attracting top students who work under you and go out and build their own careers.

None of this happens if you are doing bad science. You might be able to run it for a little while, especially if you already have a good name, but sooner or later people start reporting that your work isn't checking out. And that is the beginning of the end. The best way to avoid that is to do good work and being very careful that your results are checkable. Because it will be checked.
