Yes, we don't have barns to store crops, or food would be a source
of security.

But especially now, RE is paramount in the public eye, gold
only dimly perceived by a small minority. I think it is ingrained in
a persons personality as to where they perceive security

Exactly why many wait until it's too late and they are underwater. Also why such speculation in residential is a sad thing in the long run.
