DJ US Missile Destroyer Docks In Maldives On Peace Mission COLOMBO (AP)--The United States missile destroyer ship USS Campbell docked in the Maldives on Monday, in what the crew says an "outward demonstration" of the U.S commitment for peace in South Asian region. "This port visit is an outward demonstration of the U.S commitment to peace and stability in the region," a statement from the U.S embassy in neighboring Sri Lanka quoted Vincent McBeth, commander of a 300-member crew as saying. The USS McCampbell has been conducting routine training exercises throughout the Southeast Asian and Western Pacific region, the statement said. The sailors will participate in "friendship building and community service projects," during their stay, it said. The Arleigh Burke-class USS McCampbell is deployed as part of the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, with some 50 ships, 120 aircraft and 20,000 sailors and Marines, the statement said. A U.S. Navy ship last visited the Maldives in January 2005 to undertake tsunami relief efforts. The Maldives is a Muslim nation of about 300,000 people made up on 1,192 Indian Ocean coral islands.
