Something I researched quite a bit a number of years ago when I was interested in the sociology of religion was the number of self-proclaimed messiahs coming down from the hills every year during the time of Roman rule over what is now Israel and Palestine.

At least once a year, sometimes more often, some dude would come out of the wilderness and proclaim himself the son of god anointed to lead the Jews.

The guy we now call Jesus was simply the most successful of them. IMO he happened to hit the sweet spot when politics and social forces aligned with then-current religious beliefs, and thus he ended up as the Messiah with a capital M.
