LONDON — January sales performance at foundry chip supplier United Microelectronics Corp. lagged behind that at rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. both in terms of growth. UMC’s January sales showed year-on-year growth of 17.8 percent compared with TSMC’s year-on-year growth of 25.6 percent.
UMC achieved sales revenue in January of NT$8,407 million (about $260 million) down 6.8 percent from its sales of NT$9,018 million (about $280 million) in December 2005 and up 17.8 percent from January 2006.

Sales for January are usually down on the preceding month but UMC’s year-on-year increase lagged behind the 25.6 percent rise achieved by rival foundry in January 2006 over January 2004. However, the year-on-year increase was big jump from the 1.5 percent year-on-year increase reported by UMC for December 2005 over December 2006.
