I hope so. But the tone made me really uncomfortable. I like at least a gloss of "We felt so good DOING THIS for the CHILD"- rather than just large lashings of "this is so good for MEMEMEME, and how lovely it is that this disabled child makes me feel grounded and gives me all this love." I guess I want less of "what a fun pet this is" and more of, this child NEEDED me, rather than I needed this child.

My reaction is pretty much the same as yours. The focus is too much on the parents needs and wants, but it seems like they might provide a good home, and that is probably better than what you would get in the past (institutalization) or more distant past (killing them either directly, or through exposure or neglect).
