when I was young quail used to walk right through my backyard. I used to shoot them with my BB gun right from my bedroom window. jdn

I don't claim at all to be an expert on hunting, but physics says that a rifle or buckshot may have also caused no injury. I have not heard that the victim was directly in the aim line of fire. A tighter pattern could have missed altogether or as you say done fatal damage.
