Why has this story gotten so big, when there are much bigger and more consequential stories (Katrina, Cheney releasing secrets, the ongoing corruption scandal, etc)?

Now, the press is worked up because they didn't get the word instantaneously that Cheney has extremely poor aim. Is that news? Shoots at quail; hits fellow hunter. Shoots at bin Laden; hits Iraq. This guy aims like Ford golfed.
