I've lived in Ca all my life, and never been to NO- I don't know much about NO either, just what I've read in books. Seems a pity though, with its history and location, that it is so screwed up- but then I feel that way about the US too :-)

They want to smoke fine cigars and drink fine wine and dream in peace and quiet.

Smoked a vintage 1997 Macanudo last night, then drank a terrific Argentinian Malbec after I made Caribbean-style fish soup for my family and some friends. Heavenly. Beats the hell out of being snowed in, like I think a lot of folks on the East Coast were, a point which reminds me: I have detected a whiff of cabin fever around these boards lately.

the establishment in NOLA doesn't want New Orleans to be like Atlanta or Raleigh-Durham or Northern VA

Why would anyone want to emulate those awful places, ah, correction, Raleigh is not so bad.

Could have had good schools, good roads, which would have meant good industry, like other places in the South

We had all that once, until a corrupt black political elite took over and completely screwed things up. Katrina made political hamburger out of them, so perhaps things will improve.
