"Oil companies have learned that an appropriate source rock is necessary before they will commit to drilling a well in a potential new field."

From my experience with the abiogenic oil proponents, most don't have the slightest clue as to how the oil industry actually operates. People have been drilling for over a century with a geat deal of gusto, and wild catters have been willing to use everything from modern geological theories to dowsing and gut instinct. I wouldn't at all be surprised if some haven't tried augury. The economics of drilling is such that if an idea doesn't pan out very well, it dies. Drilling formations without source rock is such an idea.

And I want to point out that the drillers aren't always staid and stolid companies. I remember the owner of a company I worked for burned through millions of his own money backing a wild catter who had some ideas on oil in very deep formations. During that period, the company also "experimented" with no bonuses and no raises. I always wondered if there was a connection...
