Kennedy did not leave a girl to die, he left a girl who was certainly already dead. In pitch black cold fast-running water it would have been almost impossible to rescue her. He was lucky to rescue himself. It was a stupid thing to go across that bridge in pitch darkness, just as stupid and reckless as spinning and firing a shotgun without looking at what you're shooting at.

28 gauge shot in the face at close range is not "small gauge", it's potentially fatal, especially when the victim is a 78 year old. I dare you to have someone fire a shotgun in your face and see how you feel.

I've heard about people dying from single tiny shrapnel slivers in the throat. You can also die from the shock of it. If Cheney didn't have a heart condition and there hadn't been medics right there, the man could have died. The hospital was two hours away.
