TORONTO -- Muslims insulted by caricatures of the prophet Muhammad staged peaceful protests in Toronto and Montreal.

In Toronto, an estimated 1,500 protesters clogged a busy area of downtown yesterday just outside the Danish consulate.

Speakers said the cartoons were the worst possible insult to Muslims and Canadians should understand why they're so offended and hurt.

About 300 Muslim protesters rallied near Montreal's McGill University.

About 50 people held a counter-protest across the street in support of freedom of speech, including one man carrying a drawing of the Prophet.

Originally published in a Danish newspaper in September, the cartoons were reprinted by several European publications that cited freedom of speech.

They outraged many Muslims, who regard any pictures of the Prophet as blasphemous.

At least 11 people have been killed and several embassies torched in violence sparked by the images.

Protests were also held yesterday in Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, and France, home to Europe's biggest Muslim community.
