Pakistan threatens Israel Islamabad, October 1, 2004 (NSN) In a hard-hitting speech today, General Musharraf, freshly arrived from a month long foreign sojourn, warned Israel to lay off Iran, and threatened Israel with Iranian retaliation if it failed to do so. He said that it was foolhardy of Israel to be even thinking about attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, and that Iran would definitely very strongly retaliate if it were attacked. He said that it was vital for Muslim nations to come forward in the defense of the peaceful, brotherly nation of Iran, and warn Israel of the dire consequences of Iranian retaliation for unprovoked attacks that was beyond all acceptable standards of human behavior. He said that if Israel continued to ponder such plans, more Islamic nations would come forward and threaten Israel with Iranian retaliation. God forbid, if the situation escalated there might be large protests held that would encourage Iran to retaliate. He struck an ominous tone when he said that the situation could get out of hand and there could be nuclear war in South Asia where millions of Indians could die. He then took questions from the assembled reporters. By special arrangements, the first question was granted to Paula Zahn of CNN who appeared via satellite on a brand new TV set that was recently donated by the US embassy as an acknowledgement for Pakistan's contributions to the global offensive against terror. She commended president Musharraf on his appearance, and wondered whether an Israeli action against Iran would affect the war on terror. Musharraf replied "certainly it would affect. I mean we have spent the last four years in deploying several hundred troops in the Wana region, which as you know, is a very difficult region for military operations. Even though we are 400% sure that Bin Laden is not there, there is a chance he could escape to Angoor Adda or Ramiyar Khan, and then we would have to again spend several years looking for him." He said that this is why it was essential for the West to solve longstanding political problems in the Muslim world. The next question was asked by Seema Mustafa of the Asian Age in New Delhi. She said that the president looked very handsome in his freshly starched uniform, and congratulated him on his successful trip to the Islamabad Ritz Carlton to have "hot chocolate", and was thankful to Allah none of his chauffers experienced problems due to assasination attempts. Musharraf glowed with pride, and said that she looked very beautiful herself last night there. He joked that he had mentioned to his wife that perhaps it was time for him to marry again, to which she had joked that Seema should marry Richard Armitage and that he could be joint wives with her. (end) Adds Seema Mustafa (New Delhi, Asian Age) President Musharraf, looking dapper and fresh from his recent successful tour of the world, has again put New Delhi on the spot with his hard-hitting speech against Israel. South Block will have to decide whether it can save the peace process now, and is decidedly in a dicey situation. Musharraf's commando tactics seem to have permanently befuddled this government and put them on the backfoot when it comes to explaining its relations with Israel and its handling of the Kashmir dispute. Says South Asia expert Stanley Wolpert, "The time is now for India to make sincere concessions on Kashmir, and soothe Islamic sentiment, before Israel carries out preemptive strikes against Iran." Pakistan and India both claim the disputed territory of Kashmir. They have fought several wars over it, all of which have been won by Pakistan except for one which was a draw (when east Pakistan was drawn away from Pakistan). India has deployed more than 700 million troops in Kashmir, and Pakistan has strongly demanded that this number be reduced. Pakistan is also a frontline ally in war on terror, and has chased around many alleged Al Qaeda members. (agencies) Back to top bharat-rakshak.com
