Show me where Bush is making a headway in the war on terror.

I think he is making headway in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Egypt, and in the US, where Al Qaeda has very visibly failed to follow up on September 11.

But it's not going to be a quick thing. It's a battle of ideologies, like the Cold War, and will probably take nearly as long. Many in the Arab world are in love with a fundamentally stupid idea called Islamism, and getting them as disillusioned with the idea as most former Communists now are with their former faith takes a long time.

Bush thinks democracy and free markets are a better idea, but introducing them may mean a vote for the Islamists. That's not the worst result because Islamists tend to be pretty awful in action and people get tired of them. The open question is, can the rest of the world put enough pressure so that the first vote is not also the last vote?

But if you notice, much of the Arab world is either agitating for democracy now (Egypt, Lebanon) or at least paying lip service to it (Saudi Arabia). That didn't used to be true.
