I don't know how you qualitatively distinguish between nuking a US city and ending the Bill of Rights; both would be horrible tragedies with an impact lasting decades.

My goal would be a vigorous effort to stop the former without requiring the latter. I agree that if we tear down our own system of liberties for the sake of a threat that cannot tear down those liberties itself (since the force lacks the power to subjugate us), we have committed a grave sin.

However, I cannot see any likely President in 2009 and beyond pursuing this same dogmatic course. So my only concern is that the current White House leadership doesn't deem itself so crucial to national security that they won't leave. But even the hardest hardliners would stop and think twice before going that far, I hope.
