The fact that the terrorist threat is not presently existential is not really open to argument.

However, this is not to say that Islamic terrorism could eventually gather sufficient assets and morph into something quite substantial in the future.

Can anyone say with any certainty that the forces propelling Islamic fundamentalism could not in the next few decades become so strong so as eventually lead to a threat to our preeminence or to one threatening to leave our economy in shambles? We need a good chrystal ball to answer those questions, but I don't think they are unserious propositions, ones that should not be considered.
