For those who do not hunt, it may appear to be simple. After all, checking facts seems like a simple preface to publishing a story, but the press corpse seems to find it an unbearable burden.

That of course is true, because responsibility has to lie somewhere, but anyone that hunts can see how this can (and frequently does) happen when shooting at a moving target. When the bird appears, one identifies the target and raises the gun and focuses on the spot where he is going to make his shot. The bird is flying, the gun is following it's path, the hunter calculates how far to lead the target before firing, the brain sends the message to the finger to squeeze the trigger while the body keeps the gun moving at the same speed as the target while allowing enough of a lead for the shot and bird to arrive at the same place at the same time, and the finger gets the message and fires off the shot. All of this in one second! If at the time he was about to pull the trigger, someone appeared in his line of fire and he happened to break focus and see him, chances are his finger never would have got the message from the brain in time to not fire the gun. Anytime there's more than one person involved in ANYTHING and something goes wrong, SOMEBODY is going to be responsible - but responsibility doesn't necessarily imply guilt. BTW, I don't hunt.
