Gmail labels are really just like folders but with the added benefit that any particular email message can be tagged with more than one label, as B.K. said earlier. This comes in handy when you receive messages that don't easily categorize in one folder only. If you get a marriage proposal from the dentist in the same email that reminds you of your upcoming appointment, it can reside in both you marriage proposals label and your appointment reminder label. Click on either label, depending on your interest at the time, and there it will be. After your appointment has passed, you may want to keep the marriage proposal but not the appointment reminder. Don't delete the message, edit the labels associated with it.

Messages retain labels that have been assigned to them until the message is deleted, or the labels edited. Archiving simply reduces the clutter in the inbox. Google suggests you generally archive rather than delete because of the large storage space they afford. However, rather than keep labels devoted to deposed Nigerian dictators and such, I do delete messages I know I'll never need to see again.

One can create filters that assign certain labels automatically based on the from: or to: or subject fields. These can even skip the inbox entirely (if desired) and be archived right away. The label list on the left shows the number of unread messages in each label, so you'll know if you got a new message, even if the inbox is skipped. Filters are great for managing forum email like Yahoo Groups.

What you don't get is hierarchal labels, which would be nice given our years of using folders and sub folders with Windows Explorer.

Try it for a while. I think you'll grow to like Gmail.
