Well, oddly enough, in tandem with the "we fight there so we don't fight here" there was also the "we're helping the Iraqi people" mantra- and sometimes the same people were saying both things at the same time, and that raised the issue of cognitive dissonance to world class levels (imo).

I'm not so sure about that. The argument seems sound if you are focused on the al Qaeda threat-- the short term terrorist acts from which people are begging for protection. If you look at the caliphate threat, thought, it falls apart. The early Bush acts were aimed at the former.
