If US had stayed after them in Afghanistan and really gone after them world wide with all the good will and resource at their command, Al Qaeda be a footnote.. Iraq created a monster The active cells that did 9/11 were based in Hamburg and Saudi Arabia. The cells that did Madrid were based in Spain and Algeria. These comments are simply not realistic imo. I know that left side of the political spectrum wishes very hard to believe that Al Qaeda was a localized phenomenon centered on Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden, but wishing does not make it so.
