SAN FRANCISCO — Semiconductor photomask supplier Photronics Inc. Tuesday (Feb. 14) reported a net income of $9.7 million on sales of $111.9 million for the first quarter of its fiscal 2006, which closed Jan. 29. Photronics' fiscal first quarter results exceeded consensus analyst expectations for revenue and earnings.
Fiscal first quarter net income, which equates to 21 cents per share, was up 115 percent from the $4.5 million that the company reported for the first quarter of fiscal 2005 and, sequentially, up 11 percent from the $8.7 million that Photronics posted during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005.

Photronics' (Brookfield, Conn.) fiscal first quarter sales were up 11 percent from $101.2 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2005 and roughly flat with the $111.8 million posted for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005.

"Our first quarter performance proved to be more robust than historical patterns would indicate," said Mike Luttati, Photronics CEO, in a statement. "We experienced broad-based demand for both integrated circuit and flat panel display photomask technology and services as our customers were actively releasing new products and design iterations."

Consensus analyst expectations for Photronics' fiscal first quarter were revenue of roughly $107 million and earnings of roughly 13 cents per share.

[Harry: This is mirroring the strength in AUO. On the surface companies have enough belief in demand to be adding capacity as indicated by PHTN. A 27 inch LC screen TV is now $800 CND. This is the sweet spot. The real push will have to wait for next Christmas now. By then we may see a 34 inch LCD screen TV for $800. This should generate a real demand to upgrade from the older technologies. The economy need to hold up that long though. That is now in question. ]
