Seeker- It may have been polymide 'then', but its carbon fiber 'now' that Lovins is pushing. Check out his web site, rmi.org. I believe carbon fiber has a favorable physical profile, safety and strength, to steel. Costs of production are coming down fast. It will be the new oil, the new steel, the real deal! You heard it here first... 8-) -dan

Comparison of Carbon Fiber and Steel

Material
Tensile Strength (GPa)
Tensile Modulus (GPa)
Density (g/ccm)
Specific Strength (GPa)

Standard Grade Carbon Fiber 3.5 230.0 1.75 2.00

Seeker, carbon fibre has the strenght of steel, and then some, if strength to weight ratio is considered.Zolt is working on replacing rebar in concrete with carbon fibre.Carbon fibre is slowly working it's way into the auto industry and deep water drilling attachments to ocean floor..so far it is an infant..aah if i was 30 years younger.
