Al Gore becomes Hollywood leading man with film distribution deal Tue Feb 14, 3:00 PM ET

Former US vice president Al Gore is reportedly to become a Hollywood leading man after a major studio snapped up distribution rights to an environmental documentary in which he stars.

Paramount Pictures' speciality division bought worldwide rights to "An Inconvenient Truth," which weaves global warming with Gore's personal history and commitment to reversing the effects of climate change.

The movie made the famously nerdy former politician an unlikely star of last month's Sundance Film Festival where the independent movie premiered to a rapturous reception by audiences and critics.

"I decided to take part in this documentary because the filmmakers convinced me that it was the best way to get the word out to as large an audience as possible, and to convince more people to look at the truth of our circumstances," Gore said in a statement quoted by Daily Variety.

"We are recklessly, mindlessly destroying the Earth," he added.

The movie is expected to open on May 26, coinciding with the release of the book "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore's follow-up to "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit."

We could award Michael Moore and Al Gore at the same time for their "Incontinent Truth" films.
