As Alexander Haig learned, much to his chagrin, the Speaker of the House is third in line in presidential succession. Rice is doing a good job as SecState from what I hear from people still there. Not my cup of tea but not much in this administration is, so that is no surprise. The alternative would have been Dick Holbrooke under Kerry, not my cup of tea either. I think Condi would be a fine VP and a likely choice if Cheney were to leave early for whatever reason.
