I loved The Rifleman too. One of my favorites was Have Gun Will Travel, and my very favorite was Gunsmoke. I liked Gunsmoke best when the episode had a lot of James Arness.

All these stories had a great ethic of compassion and honor. I guess that's why I liked them so much.

Also, the heroes were giants. Boys need heroes to grow up with. Unfortunately, many (most?) youngsters do not have admirable heroes in their lives. They tend to see sports figures or celebrities as heroes.

I had two such men in my life, my father and my friend's father. I guess I was extraordinarily lucky.
