I used to shoot coots with a .22 semiauto. Didn't hit many but it was fun trying....

True, 22lr is not effective for birds. Most high school kids couldn't afford 12 gauge then. They were after jack rabbits and gophers (prairie dogs). When they scared up some bird it became a target. I sat near them in a study hall and overheard a lot of their stories preceding the fateful day.
