This time, there literally is a "smoking gun." If that can toast him, great, but he's weaseled out of everything else.

One of the problems political extremists have is a poor ability to perceive themselves as others do. They seem to actually get some sort of high from the juice of spining speculation to the furthest reaches of their imaginations.

We don't know the whole story yet about what happened. However, there is all kinds of far fetched speculations about drunken debauchery in the midst of wild and reckless gun play, and Cheney lying about it to cover his butt.

This type of stretching actually becomes the story. When the dust settles and everyone sees that it was an accident in a relatively typical hunting group, where nothing inappropriate was occuring, then what ever mistakes Cheney made will seem like nothing to the average jill/joe on the street; in fact they will likely see the treatment of Cheney as cruel.

My speculation is that Cheney will actually walk away with a higher approval rating because in the midst of suffering from a personal tragedy he was lamblasted by a media wanting to add to his pain by humiliating him in public. His presentation on Fox News was decent and honorable under the circumstances. People who saw it are likely to feel simpathy and raise their approval of him.

He might still end up leaving office but health concerns will likely be given as the reasons and if so he will leave on good terms.
