"You have more faith that the government would rebate a windfall like that than I do, but your idea might have some promise if it could be assured."

No, probably not. (I have VERY LITTLE confidence that the government wouldn't try to steal or keep the money... same as with ANY revenue source.)

"What's wrong with making biofuels more cost-effective without taxing oil?"

Nothing's 'wrong' with that. I'm all for it... how do you do it?

(PS --- I'm not real optimistic about the economic viability or supposed environmental benefits of 'biofuels', but I'm willing to be convinced....)

"The flat tax like the Russian one you linked to would have promise, but the consequences are unknowable."

WRONG. onsequences are VERY KNOWABLE --- it has been a HUGE SUCCESS in *every country* where it has been rolled out over the past few years.

NONE have gone back!

The KEY DIFFICULTY though, and one of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS, is that the LOOPHOLES ('special tax preference items') need to be ELIMINATED. The MORE LOOPHOLES YOU ELIMINATE THE LOWER YOU CAN GO WITH THE FLAT INCOME TAX RATE!

MUCH of the benefits only come to play when loopholes are DRASTICALLY reduced. There are great economic benefits from SIMPLIFICATION of the tax codes, and GETTING THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE BUSINESS OF INTERFERING IN THE MARKETS, CHOOSING THE WINNERS AND LOSERS.

"And more fuel efficient vehicles too."

The 'cure' for high oil prices is high oil prices.

If the prices go high enough, and stay high enough, transportation will HAVE to get more efficient.
