My apologies - my eyez glazed over halfway through the original Mordor analogy.

Nonetheless, the number of Americans who believe that AQ or jihadists in general pose an existential threat to the US is large, and the sentiment is stoked by Administration rhetoric (they are sworn to destroy us and our freedom, etc.) to justify all-out war policies and powers.

It's a case of garbage-in-garbage-out thinking from the skeptics' POV.
