Fine, it doesn't change the point any: our competition manages to compete just fine with nominal prices for gasoline much higher then ours.

(As I ALSO pointed out: those are just nominal rates. In truth, the US --- i.e., the US taxpayer --- 'pays' about the same for a gallon of gasoline as Europe does on average... once you factor back into the costs the MILITARY COST we spend each year to defend the oil export routes out of the Middle East. Of course, this means that the EXPENSE is dispersed *more widely* in the US. Instead of the full-freighted cost being paid by the gasoline consumer [as it is in our developed market peer group], here in the US the TAXPAYER winds up footing much of the bill --- whether he uses gasoline directly, or not.)
