The PM controlled in some ways by al sadr will be asking soon enough. They want us out Hawk--not all of them and of course the tragedy is the ones who bet on us will get screwed when we leave just like in VN. Start getting those dudes visas so when the last helicopter pulls out there wont be folks hanging on. Can u imagine what shia militants or sunni terrorists will do to the folks who were with us even to a minor degree. Am i wrong about that as a possibility if we leave?????

Hawk, re: We need to continue to OFFER our presence in Iraq until the government ASKS us to leave. Our presence there as an "honest broker" as well as a party to "stiffen their spines" when the chips are down, is crucial, IMO.

But the minute they ask us to leave, we should.

That way, if things collapse, we can assert that we did what we could and the responsibility for an collapse of the Iraqi government would rest upon the shoulders of the country's leadership.

Don't be naive. The minute we tell them to ask us to leave, they'll ask, but not a minute sooner. We know how to shower the leadership with billions in cash. The Iraqi leaders won't send us packing until the cash stops flowing and the cash won't stop flowing until whoever thinks for Bush decides we can no longer hold to a losing course or the Congress gets some backbone. Don't hold your breath.

And yes, when we leave "we can assert that we did what we could and the responsibility for a collapse of the Iraqi government would rest upon the shoulders of the country's leadership."

But, don't forget, Bush will also assert that the failure in Iraq was fueled in part by the support the "week-kneed" American opposition gave the terrorists and insurgents.

And I suspect you'll be nodding your head on every word. Ed

But the minute they ask us to leave, we should.

The much worse problem is if they never ask. What should we do in that case? Michael at least has an answer for that.
