You have my sympathy. One of the reasons I got a new computer (with a fastere disk) was because my old one couldn't run a checkdisk anymore without going off into the ether. I stopped everything running in background that I could find and it still took days and even then I never had the patience to see if it would finish. <g>

Thanks. I'm desperately trying to avoid the getting-a-new-computer trip. Thank heavens this time the problem is with an overloaded external disk. Since it's got the backup stuff from both my study computer and my wife's study computer, I need to save it. So said checkdisk will just have to keep trudging along. If it stays that way through the weekend, then I may have to shut it down.

My big mistake was letting it get overloaded.

I'm ordering another external disk from PCConnection today. Not expensive.
