Hey Donnie, Thanks for the test results. Since your gauge was larger, and the shot was larger than Cheney's, you probably got better penetration and pattern then Dick's shot.

My thinking is this: The range was probably closer than 30 yards. It was probably closer to 20. The victim probably had his vest open at the top, thus removing some of the protection in the upper chest area. For a tiny BB sized shot to penetrate the chest area and get to the heart means that it had some pretty good velocity. Remember the smaller the shot the lower the effective range. Looking at the report, the pattern of the hit was about 24" in diameter. The center of the shot was over the victim's shoulder. The report also had the range of 11 to 50 yards checked. The spread depends on many factors, but I'll bet the gun that Cheney used has a tight pattern. But once you get past 60 feet with that small shot it's going to spread pretty good.

Basically I think that the estimate of the range was a little long in the report, but in the ball park. The chest area is very tough. You have all the ribs and cartilage to penetrate. Hence my belief that the range was probably closer than reported.
