Democracy... the worst form of government on earth, except every other one. "...the people make it so. They can alway undo that by the same method." Yep. Eventually, reality seeps in, and voters learn to watch what the politicians actually do more then what they are saying. :) And, I believe that history shows the American people generally abhor Autocracy, corruption, self-dealing, waste, bloated government, and one Party control --- which tends to promote the preceding bad things... so I'm still optimistic that our system is more self-correcting then most. Unfortunately, the strangle-hold the Dems & Reps have on the entire political process, the high ring fence they have erected around it to keep competition out, is likely to be more resistant to fixing.
