Click "cancel." It won't hurt a thing. Really. It's just looking for bad spots on the disk. Closing it down is no different from closing down your browser or TurboTax or whatever else it is that you run on the computer.

I wish it were that easy. You're thinking of what happens when you run checkdisk as a program. The one that runs on startup is much more thorough.

It's not now looking for bad spots on the disk. That was only step one. It's now correcting the directory, reestablishing links. As it does that, it moves information around on the disk.

Given the vagaries of Windows, who knows what happens when that is interrupted.
