Good points raised in that discussion. Our import barriers hurt poor countries more than our official aid helps them, and that's not even counting the fact that the official aid is more likely to be pocketed by dictators and their cronies, or go in to big grandiose project of questionable utility than the money earned from trade. (With the exception in trade in items controlled by the government, for example in many major oil exporters the government controls the oil industry and pockets a lot of the profits)
