The meaning for liberal I was using is that used as a slur by many of the more vocal RW adherents, here and publicised in newspapers/blogs: meaning apparently "anyone left of me who is not so dogmatic that they will never change their mind, and hence can be characterised as flip-flopping".

Most of those characterised/denigrated as "liberals" on SI seem far more ready to attempt to understand their opponents and their arguments than the reverse. IMO it's connected with the knowledge that we do not have divine revealed truth and thus there may be validity in viewpoints other than their own.
We have Murdoch mouthpieces over here and this is not something they're noted for, to put it mildly.
