re: Solar panels, however, are too expensive and will never make up for their cost over the lifetime of the panels, even with the tax breaks. It's a nice thing to install if you have the money and want to make an environmental statement, but until the cost of energy rises substantially, it won't make economic sense.

Did you ever try to calculate the subsidies that the energy companies receive from the feds? They are huge... and increasing. The energy market is anything but a natural marketplace.

If renewable energy received the same subsidies as the oil and gas industries, then renewable might be as or more economical. I don't know... but I do know that the political and economic harm caused by importing our energy in incalculable.

Clean fuels are cheaper in the long run, much cheaper. But like any change it's a little stressful in the beginning.

That's where new leadership in DC can come in and smooth the way. But yes, Americans will have to make a little sacrifice at first and give up some of their energy-burning ways. They can burn all they want, but it should be made more expensive, and cheaper to heat and fuel the clean way. The carrot and the stick. That's the oinly way this is going to work. But first we have to get the oil lobbyists Bush and Cheney out of the White House. They cheated to get into power then failed miserably anyway, so who needs them?
