I remember when "The Hanging Tree" premiered in Missoula. Marty Robbins came to the theater and sang the title song. He introduced Dorothy Johnson, the author of the book the movie was made from. Gary Cooper starred. It's still a great movie. And an even greater, though not well-known, book.

Dorothy Johnson also wrote "A Man Called Horse," which turned into a series of movies with Richard Harris, and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," with both John Wayne and James Stewart.

I remember Dorothy Johnson padding around the university library when I went to college. She was about five feet tall and wore very thick glasses. You'd never dream in a million years that she had written many wonderful books and stories about the old west.
