UN Agencies: 6.7 Mln In Sudan Need Food Despite Harvest

General - how do you grab the loot from the tank when all you have is a rock? Clinton and Rubin cut the defense budget - that is what helped our economy in the 90's - fewer tanks - but it seems the warmongers back in the saddle again - your grandpa averted the tanks with elqouent words - but that was a different president back then

ROME (AP)--About 6.7 million people in Sudan, including in the war-ravaged Darfur region, are exposed to malnutrition and will need food assistance this year, two U.N. food agencies said.

The Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program estimated that 728,000 metric tons of food aid would be required in 2006 despite a good harvest in the African country.

In a report Friday, the agencies said the food aid would mainly target more than 2 million internally displaced people and almost 3.5 million people in Darfur and in areas in southern, central and eastern Sudan.

The agencies, both based in Rome, issued their report after a mission late last year to assess the food situation in the country.

Sudan's overall cereal production for 2005 and 2006 - amounting to about 4.823 million metric tons - was 55% higher than the 2004-05 harvest and 17% above the average of the previous five years, the agencies reported. Rainfall over much of the country and improved security - which allowed for increased cultivation - were the biggest reasons for the good harvest, officials said.

However, millions of people still lack access to food because of war and poor infrastructure, among other factors, the report stated.

Last month, FAO appealed for $40 million for the African country, saying that supporting agricultural development is crucial to ensuring lasting peace.

A peace accord was reached last year after 20 years of civil war in southern Sudan - a war that was separate from the ongoing ethnic killing in the Darfur region.

Russians In Far East Protest Housing Maintenance Rate Hike

Capitalism is better system eh?

MOSCOW (AP)--Several thousand people rallied in Russia's Pacific coast city of Vladivostok on Saturday to protest against rising costs of housing maintenance services, which were virtually free during the Soviet era.

About 5,000 people, many of them elderly, gathered in the city's central square, holding signs denouncing rate increases. Hundreds rallied in Khabarovsk, another city in Russia's Far East.

Protesters in Vladivostok argued that the quality of maintenance services isn't increasing along with the rates and that the system of subsidies fails to adequately protect poor people, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

It said the protest took place despite moves by the regional government to ease the increases imposed this year, including limiting the hike to no more than 20% over last year's rate.

Maintenance rates have been rising since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, adding to concerns of millions of Russians struggling to get by. Increase were imposed across the country this year.
