No, Vietnam was a first where half (or more) of the country was actively opposed to an ongoing war. Rove used a repeat of 1972 to brand anti-war democrats as "traitors" in 2002 and 2004, with some success. Just enough success to win.

Remember though, by the time 2008 rolls around the Iraq War will probably be history. Mainly because we can't afford the ongoing troop commitment. So being anti-war may be a moot point.
