The problem nationally is that those "Reagan democrat" swingvoters can be swayed to vote for the rightwinger not by issues which really impact their lives, but by wedge issues. That Southern Strategy of the GOP takes a lot of Democratic charisma to get around, or else a huge scandal like Watergate to discredit the GOP.

Carter and Clinton are the only Dems to win lately and they were both southern governors and outsiders ("folks like us"). Clionton was helped by Perot and amazing charisma. Carter was helped by Watergate.

Kerry tried to bridge that gap with Edwards but the wedge issues, war and dishonest smear campaigns still worked for Bush last year. Maybe they won't in the next two elections. Even so though, the chances for someone like Russ Feingold to be elected president are remote at best. I admire Feingold, but Feinstein would have a better chance. If you know what I mean.

The White House in 2008 is actually going to be difficult for Dems unless Mark Warner takes off, because the GOP has McCain and he can probably beat Kerry so long as he isn't tainted by Bush's scandals.

The real hope, and something to be very optimistic about, is taking back both houses of congress in November. So fight for that. And "taking back" may mean an alliance with GOP moderates, especially in the senate where even a clean sweep by DEms only gives them a tie with Cheney as the tie-breaker, unless he is impeached or forced to resign by scandals.
