snow devils are the winter equivalent
of a dust devil -- one of those whirlwinds
(mini tornado) that you sometimes
see in the desert, or even just in
parking lots, etc...

in winter, you generally see them
during very cold weather
when the snow is fine and dry.
if the winds are strong,
you'll often see a group of
snow devils blasting along
together over flat, open fields.

the farm across from us has large,
flat fields with no hedgerows,
so snow devils are a common sight.
some of them get to be quite large
and spin the snow upwards
for 50 feet or more .

actually, they're quite neat to see,
but best observed through the
living room window rather than
from outside on a cold day! <g>
