No, the Democratic party simply told Hackett they would not fund his candidacy, only his opponent in the primary. Hackett did the math, his feelings were hurt and he pulled out, though he could still run for congress with full DNC support, and he would win.

Unless Hackett is an overly proud (and a big immature) guy, he will take the congressional seat. Otherwise he's finished. Tragic but this stuff happens. Similar situation in Texas where McClellan's mother was forced to run as an independent rather than face off against Perry. The RNC refused to support her. Perry looks weak and beatable due to his Bushie corrupotion.
