And I objected to the frame. The country, at the presidential level, is basically at a 50-50 level. And that's with weak Dem presidential candidates. Not evidence of Dem failings.

As I said, at this level, one could argue that the Reps' failings have left them with a 50-50 split running against weak candidates. And they need to move to their left.

Frankly, again, I think this is one more place the left/right distinction breaks down. E's point that much of the country is concerned about the Iraq invasion and moving toward fed up. I don't see that as left or right. I don't think the opposition to Bush's proposed social security changes was a left/right thing. Just seniors worried about their pensions. Etc.

My guess is there's a much deeper disaffection with politics involved. We should keep our eyes out for the first party/politician to tap into that.
