But Vichy certainly didn't do anything that Germany didn't want it to do; for example it was (as is now proven) all too eager to send railcars full of Jews out to... well, whatever their fate was to be, to be honest I doubt they knew or cared. I think that depended upon what part of "Vichy"-France and its proximity to the German Army. I have to believe the colonial parts of France were not going out of their way to serve the German cause militarily. But we can ask ourselves whether Wiemar Germany was a "puppet state" of the Allies after WWI.. The reason this is important is because the terms Hitler forced upon the French were very similar to the terms foisted upon the German's, including limiting them to a 100,000 man army, and forcing them to pay the cost of the occupation. As for anti-semitism, you forget that France was one of the most Anti-Semitic nations PRIOR to the war, as well as having a strong Fascist streak that resented the socialists/communists who had dominated the country in the 1930s and, the Fascists claimed, brought that defeat and disgrace upon their country. It's not much of a stretch to believe that Jews would be sent packing from France because there were perceived as being socialists and communists (as many, indeed, were at that time). At least that's my view on it.. But what we have to acknowledge is that the US granted Vichy France political recognition and actually provided an Ambassador. Hawk
