Hi Bill,
Realism is the natural fallback after the ideology du jour crashes and burns. The problem is always how you define realism. Buchanan thinks he is realist as do the neocons. So realism's tenets need to put the national interest of the US first but here again buchanan, the dems and the neocons all believe they have the national interest in mind. Personally i think you have to measure that national interest over time. Supporting the shah may have had short term benefits but perpaps going the other way would have staved off this current iran regime. This is not simple stuff. Perhaps all realism is recognizing what works and what doesnt. When something doesnt like expecting flowers in iraq or thinking rummy a competent manager, the admin in power must be quick on its feet to go to Plan B. Many defenders of the war including myself used tha Plan A/Plan B argument but on a more stategic level this administration never did that or didnt do it enough. Mike
