This is yet another issue that doesn't fit the left/right cut very well.

I agree that there are lots of things that don't fit. If it looked like I was framing it that way, something was lost in communication. There are plenty of liberal or conservative tenets that have no clear counterparts. Free trade is a tenet of the right. What is the counterpart to that? Protectionism? Fair trade? Isolationism? Dunno. Maybe all of the above. But that doesn't make any of them a tenet of the left.

I know that free trade is, or was, a tenet of the right, oft betrayed. Bush betrayed that with the steel tariff. As he has betrayed other tenets of the right. What's happening on the left is irrelevant to my point. I realize that's your focus for everything but it wasn't my intention to involve the left, which has its own tenets and betrayals.
