"Why would O.T. turn away a request by a large company to get a "foot in the door" ($5,000,000) and proceed to raise money via smaller investors?"

Based on my understanding, the 5 million would have resulted in an interest in the property by the major. Obviously, this could have impeded the ability of OT management to sell the company to another "higher" bidder. It is much more advantageous for OT's hands not to be tied.

Polish, what he said, plus they might not want to tip their hand with ALL of the information as it becomes available.
It would also be advantageous to have majors bidding against each other, should conditions warrant...that usually sweetens the pot.

Your money, your choice.
I hope you're kicking yourself in the buttocks, later....but you'll still have a nice piece of the action, in any event.
We buys our tickets, we takes our chances...or not.
The results so far hold great promise for continued success.
IMHO.
Best,
