Then there are those like JChris who made out better than they were before by moving out of a bubble zone to live in a paid-off house. I personally don't know many that made it out this way, but those who did probably have INCREASED their discretionary buying power. Too bad the only ones I know are the serial refi'ers: the in-laws I encouraged to refi when long rates kept dropping and then later figure out the gold mine they are sitting on and decide on their own to refi again to an arm, and then again to an interest-only.
